Gender equality in support for film projects
Main Article Content
Abstract
Introduction: The analysis addresses gender inequality in the financing of film projects in Spain, aiming to determine whether films directed by women receive less financial support than those led by men. Methodology: Between 2021 and 2023, 266 projects funded by the ICAA were studied, 119 directed by women and 147 by men. Qualitative methods and statistical tests were applied to analyze both production budgets and the subsidies granted. Results: Preliminary data reveal that projects led by women tend to have lower initial budgets, which negatively impacts the amount of funding received, despite earning good evaluation scores. Discussion: This situation reflects structural inequalities stemming from historical factors, such as women’s limited access to financial support networks, which contributes to perpetuating the funding gap. Conclusions: The study highlights the need to reform ICAA policies to ensure true equity in resource allocation and to promote greater competitiveness for women within the Spanish film industry.
